What does “FTP Error 553 - progname exe: permission denied” mean?

Answer: If you are getting this error then you need to define your FTP Initial Directory. The program is unable to create the directories it needs to so you are getting this error. This is likely due to your connection folder (the remote folder your ftp program defaults to upon connection to your web server) being different than the folder where your web page files are located.

If you are getting a 553 "anything" exe: permission denied message then you need to change the value for your FTP Initial Directory. Click here to see how.

If you already have something set in this field then it needs to be changed because the publishing wizard cannot find your folder(s).

Here is how to fix this problem.

  • Start the program.
  • Click the “Finish” button.
  • Answer “No” if asked if you want to rebuild all pages.
  • Click the “Advanced...” button.
  • Enter the correct folder into the “Initial Directory” field.
  • Click “OK.”
  • Click “Yes.”
  • Click “Close” if you do not wish to publish at this time or “Next >” if you do.

If the correct directory was specified in the Initial Directory field then the publishing wizard will simply upload the files without any more “550 Errors.”

If you continue to receive this error and you do not know what your Initial Directory is there are a couple of things you can try. Please go here to see what they are.
