What is a key file? Why do I need one?

Answer: A key file is the mechanism we use to license our software.

A RealCart™ “key file” is nothing more than a tiny text file with a bunch of numbers in it. The key file contains your licensed URL as well as any branding information that you may have optionally purchased.

When you start the RealCart program on your PC it looks for the key file(s) that match the store(s) you have defined. If RealCart finds a valid key it will operate in Registered Mode meaning that the restrictions of Demo Mode are no longer present.

When someone visits your web site and goes to your RealCart enabled storefront RealCart will attempt to locate a key file as it loads. If it finds a key file it will compare the domain name encoded into the key file with the domain name it is being loaded from. If the two domain names match then RealCart runs in Registered Mode and allows your customer to buy as many items as he or she desires.

If the URL in the key file doesn’t match or if there is no key file present the shopping cart will run in Demo Mode.
